- Monogram of Christ's name (Christogram) used by Constantine I (q.v.). It consisted of an overlap of the first two Greek letters for Christos, the Chi (X) and a Rho (P). The monogram developed from the original labarum (q.v.), the military standard of Constantine I. The use of the monogram was apotropaic, which is to say to turn away evil, which is why it was used on the labarum (q.v.) of Constantine's armed forces.
